Another month, another season

Which starts now - within reason
As we pull up chairs to lawn tables
To prepare ourselves to be better able
To entertain friends from near and far
Some who walk, and others - by car
So we may share with them in our yard
All of the fruits of our labor hard

And discuss with them our vast interests
Of which there are so many we're blessed
And we share our food and drink and ale
As we reach out and tell them our stale
Old jokes - which have done rounds too many
And dark stories which aren't worth a penny
And then when all is said and done, we part
With promises of connecting again for darts

Or swims, or volleyball, badminton or chess
And then we follow up to make plans or less
And just call to shoot the breeze as we chat
Statements of words which are not all that
And words of pain are tinged with fires of old
Which sting so as they are stoked with bold
References to acts which are left in the past
Where they should stay in closed files at last

And the new days of season, month and week
Can now go forward with tongue stuck in cheek
As we plant one foot firmly in front of the other
And scoff at nets which some have put under cover
And then as we proceed to dance along the high wire
We truly believe we have captured truth as we aspire
To greater heights - closer to the top of the tent
Where we will be able to reach out like a real gent.
