A Wild Rabbit Christopher W. Thomas (tristram@erols.com) dnb-as1s58.erols.com Thurs, June 12, 1997 at 7:33AM |
There it was - all nestled quiet in the front yard
Of the little house up the road, playing its card
Looking sullenly at me out of the side of its face
Wondering, for sure, if I would try to invade its space
Ready to leap up and hurriedly scurry - all too fast away
If I do make any kind of abrupt move towards it, this day
But I did not, for had I moved to recognize its position
Then the dog would have seen it, and made it her mission
To run fast and so head off the little rabbit at wood edge
And thus, - I would have found myself quite on the ledge
Balanced between my dog's quite obvious hunting skills
Along with her apparent need to quickly run amuck and kill
Anything which pops into her field of vision and access
Which she always uses to follow after with great success
And a poor little wild animal's need to continue to be part
Of the greater scheme of things, just because he's got heart
As does any of the millions of live beings God put on earth
Because He wanted there to be a preponderance, not a dearth
As each and every one of them (and US) have a right to be
And thus nothing - and NOBODY - should EVER make us flee ...
