Yesterday was a real holiday in these here parts

A day set aside to honor all of the folks whose paths
Took them to some foreign lands to engage in battles
All in the name of peace ... a reason to test one's mettle

So many wars now have been fought through the years
Leaving friends and family with many, many sad tears
From the Revolutionary War all the way thru to the Gulf
Veterans are honored for the parts they played on behalf

Of their countrymen and women who watched from afar
As some of these soldiers earned medals and some stars
By becoming heroes in the face of hardship and adversity
Something which can't be taught in the halls of university

And so we've set aside one special day each and every year
When we honor all who've fought in wars past without fear
And whether they gave their lives, or came home in peace
We give our thanks, and bow right down to our very knees
