In Effigy

Today's the day to light the fire
Then throw on the efigy of that liar
The one who tried to blow up Parliament
But failed ... and this day is testament

For every year since - the Brits have torched
Dummies of the man who almost scorched
The seat of government with his attempt ...
To change things ... and thus to vent ...

Frustrations over taxes, power and other things
By the court of James the 1st, a Stuart King
So they arrested Guy Fawkes on his way in
Accusing him of attempting to cause the din

Which would have ensued had the plot not been foiled
By word getting around after a plotter's friend recoiled
And warned a Parliamentarian not to go into the House
As it was going to be blown up that day by a louse ...

And so now the Brits celebrate a plot nipped in the bud
By lighting a bonfire on November 5th to throw some mud
On the memory of a man who almost blew up the Parliamentary bed
And so fireworks are set off all around as Guy Fawkes burns to shreds
