Discoverer, mariner, governor, salesman

Representing Spain, but born an Italian
Tribute was paid once again to him today
For having discovered America - in a way

Actually, he never ever set foot on America at all ...
Only the Bahamas, and in the West Indies, made calls
To lands now known as Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico
And later explored Venezuela in his last and final show

Never-the-less ... we now give him his due ...
For having made (on this very day in 1492)
The most significant discovery in all history
The land that became America - the most free

And so we pay homage to the man who made it be
Who enabled a nation to grow roots from the trees
Columbus helped to seed when he found this great land
From which many acorns grew, as he made his stand ...
