I saw a haunted hurt look which exposed fear
It was apparent even though there were no tears
The realization suddenly came she'd not be there
To brush his hair or to smother him with care
An expression of bewilderment so touching
It suddenly hit me how sad it is to be orphaned
At an age when a child so needs a mother's comfort
To hug him, and to guide him, and to see he's taught
All of those things a twelve-year-old needs to know
Some of which he'll find come with sobs on a pillow
As he begins to accept she'll no longer be able to blow
His nose, or wipe his tears, or hold him close to show
The love she had for not only him and his older brother
But for all children everywhere who needed a mother
She touched the hearts of so very many everywhere
A light which burned incessantly with a bright glare
The shine on the crown of a princess which blazed
As the head under it spoke so much good as it aged
And we all watched her life as it changed day-to-day
As she burned the candle at both ends, and yet stayed
So very bright in our minds that now she has gone
We've bestowed her with so much reverence and song
For she epitomized both glamour and winning attitude
We borrowed from it to change our own lives in tune
And now all that is over and she just lives in pictures
A beam which has stopped in the sky frozen but sure
And the eyes of a child cry out in anguish and pain
For him - she was no celebrity now become legend
She was just a mother - doting, yet warm and loving
A mother who may have been gracious and budding
But to him - she was Mum ... and always, always there
And now - there is none ... and so - the eyes blankly stare
