When we start to get used to things and then become dependent

It can be seen as an addiction, worn around the neck, a pendant
Which we've had so long it's become a real part of our personality
Worn proudly, as though it's stuck to us, giving us some quiet glee

There are other addictions, it can be said, such as those not good
For our bodies and minds, and those need to be seen as false wood
Which breaks apart and splinters when too much weight is applied
Many of those, we can live without, just by telling selves they're denied

But some of those things some folks tend to refer to as addictions
Are useful tools we can employ to keep our lives real, not fiction
Sorting out the ones which contribute to the betterment of our life
Is something we all can do, given perspective, without any strife

Once we have sorted thru and resolved to stick with only the positives
Then our lives take on a better hue, and we learn to love self complete
And then we realize what we saw as addictions are not really, at all
And we start to embrace ourselves, and separate thought from fool
