The scene out of the kitchen picture window

Is almost surreal with the effect now shown
Everything is covered in a huge white blanket
The kind which does not warm bodies, or planet

Reminds me of 40 years back when I first got here
And there was an even greater layer, instilling fears
I'd landed on a whole 'nother planet than one I'd left
Which'd never seen this much snow all at once spread

- Upon the meadows and in the valleys near my old home
A vision I now sometimes pine for, whenever I'm all alone
For friends then seemed to be very much in abundance
But, in 25 years here, all seem to hide, or look askance

Not sure I understand why it all has turned out this way
But it's clear the only blankets which surround me today
Are the very large white one which now covers all outside
And the one of loneliness, now covering my heart, inside.
