Encased in Ice

The heron stands quietly upon the shore
Gazing out at the lake's tightly closed door
The swans, entrapped, in a small iceless pool
Float towards the shored bird in a scene, cruel

For the bird with the long spindly legs and neck
Perches above the crumbs strewn on the boat deck
Guarding his find, zealously, with proud posture, tall
As the swans move in closer - the ice makes them fools
