President for Six Months

On this day in eighteen hundred and eighty-one
President James Garfield was shot with a gun ...
Fired by Charles Jules Guiteau - a man with a grudge
For he had sought office, and was given the brush ...

As had many others who Garfield had promised posts
But who were glossed over by other appointees, most
In the Stalwart section of the Republican party ...
Who had contributed to make Garfield the nominee

Which just goes to show that for every single good deed
A return one is simple payback, and one which should be given heed ...
An extremely pleasant way of looking at things in life
And one which, when followed, will eliminate strife ...
