For The Love of a Yank

On this date in nineteen seventy-two
The Duke of Windsor died - the man who
... Gave up the throne of England - for a Yank
And one who'd twice walked along the divorce plank

After having sat on it for not quite a year
During which time it became quite clear
The Crown would not be allowed to sit
On the head of a man who saw fit ...

To take for his wife a commoner ...
Who'd made marriage vows hollower
Regardless of her class or nationality
Wallis Simpson could not personify ...

Any regality, because of her past life ...
So, - if he insisted on making her his wife
He would have to give up the throne ...
And find another country to call home!!!

And so he did - going to live in the south of France
Even though, he was also given another dance ...
For, from that day in twenty-six until his seventy-two death
The ex-King would be The Duke of Windsor, at his brother's behest

- Tristram
