We picked it together - a table of solid oak

Two matching oak chairs - backs with spokes
A huge pedestal base to support the round top
We even assembled it together, making us not

- Any longer a couple ... fused in mind by love
For once it was one piece, fit together as a glove
The combined force we were - singed with sparks
And a few short days later - you boarded your ark

To float upstream to see family in another state
As I got on with my many projects, and then fate
- Took a hand, and when your visit there was over
You called me - begging to come back to clover

And I informed you then it was totally up to you
But I no longer wanted to be made to feel so blue
So you took it upon yourself to go in another direction
Leaving me alone to live without your tight friction

And now - two whole years have passed since that day
When we shared so much of ourselves in a special way
And I look back on it with mixed feelings and some elation
Slightly bemused it turned out the way it did, with trepidation
