Overnight rains hit the cold chilled ground

Ice has formed in spots quite large around
Causing one to lose footing as boots slipped
And muscles tried vainly to keep from a trip

Which catches us unaware as we fear not rain
For it's only water and thus, is not quite the same
As snow and sleet and hail and all those conditions
Which tend to slow us and keep us home as a tradition

But this kind of situation is quite dangerous as it's not seen
And people drive around in it without knowing how mean
It can be - until they over-rev their engines and then slide
All about the road and perhaps into someone else's hide

Only by walking over it first can you quite clearly assess
The trouble you could have later as you drive in the mess
For slippery spots which send feet flying are just as liable
To cause similar problems for cars which are more unreliable.
