Colored corn husks adorned with red ribbons
Lie on glass catching sunbeams, throbbing
Or so it seems as rays do dance on the husk
And my mind wanders back to a previous dusk
When corn was higher than I could then see
And there were many friends around with me
As we drove through fields on the back of truck
Cutting down stalks and throwing them in back
So much there was, it took an entire long day
As we gathered it all and then rolled in the hay
For once the work was all done, there was time
Left over to enjoy each other and laugh so fine
For the abundance of the crop had overwhelmed
We were all pretty tired, but glad we'd been at helm
And patted ourselves on the backs for our good deed
Something we'd all volunteered to do - quite for free
And now I look back at that wonderful time of life
Wondering why there'd not been more of those times
When volunteering was an absolutely wonderful thing
And the enjoyment of it all really made bells ring ....
