Softened to the Core

Heart's softened to the core
Mind's so ... quite a bit more
At least, it feels that way at times
Even though I know it's primed ...

But the heart is worn upon the arm
Where it's an easy target for harm
And yet ... it's kept out there on display
Where, sometimes, I feel it eroding away

For it's full of so much love to give
And, yet ... it's often pushed - to live
Causing it to wither upon the limb
Losing its all-encompassing hymn

- Tristram
